New book aims to make gamification simple for higher education professionals
Two University of Kansas scholars began using gamification in their teacher prep courses and had enough success that they decided to write a book dedicated to helping other educators with the strategy. The result was "Gamification Made Simple: A Guide for Higher Education Professionals."

KU expanding program to bring students with disabilities to college, including to Wichita, Atchison
Researchers at KU have secured a grant to expand the Transition to Postsecondary Education program. The program helps bring students with disabilities to higher education, work toward career goals and meet in-demand jobs in their communities. The work will expand outreach to educators and families across Kansas and establish similar programs at WSU Tech and Benedictine College.

Week of activities for KU Homecoming begins Oct. 27
The University of Kansas will host its 113th Homecoming, sponsored by Central Bank, Oct. 27-Nov. 2. The week culminates with the KU football game against Oklahoma. KU Alumni has announced finalists for major student and faculty awards to be presented during the Homecoming game.

KU lands grant to expand research including individuals with disabilities, creating new career pathways
The Kansas University Center on Disabilities has received a grant to help other universities adopt a model of research that includes individuals with disabilities as part of the entire research process. It will also create career pathways for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to work in the research field.

Winners crowned among group of moving collections in Snyder Book Contest
The University of Kansas Libraries honored eight student finalists and awarded cash prizes at the 67th annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest during a reception April 24 at Watson Library. Charles Johnson, a senior from Lawrence, won first place in the undergraduate division, and Nicholas Hoekstra, a doctoral student in special education from Comstock Park, Michigan, won first place in the graduate division.

CIDDL contributes to new report on AI from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology
James Basham and Eleazar Vasquez from the Achievement & Assessment Institute’s Center for Innovation, Design, and Digital Learning (CIDDL) served as advisers on a new report on AI integration in education from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology (OET). The report, titled “Empowering Education Leaders: A Toolkit for Safe, Ethical, and Equitable AI Integration,” supports education leaders in adopting AI in the classroom to protect all students.

Study finds when self-determination model provided to schools with support, teachers and all students benefit
A KU program implemented the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction in 15 schools and found that when it was provided with online training models and coaching, schools were more likely to implement it with fidelity and continue its use.

Project MounTaiN at KU is in its second year of training working and future teachers to better serve early childhood students with high-incidence disabilities and partnering with area schools to provide student teaching and support to education centers.
