School of Education statement on diversity, equity and inclusion

Dear School of Education community members,

As a School of Education we are troubled by the incidents of racism and oppression happening both on and off campus.  We are concerned about the safety and health of our students, faculty and staff – particularly those who hold minoritized identities.   At an institution of higher learning, any incident involving discrimination, violence, or harassment needs to be recognized and those involved held accountable.  For example, we are concerned about the reported incident involving a trans woman of color on our campus.  The KU School of Education understands that its students, faculty and staff are asking for the support and recognition necessary to be full participants in the school, university and society. The school is focusing on improving representation, climate, curriculum, and organizational structures to better serve our constituents. As educators, we have a special responsibility to work to alter the systems that perpetuate racism, discrimination, and oppression.  As such, we pledge to work to educate ourselves and those we work with about the realities facing so many. 

Our plan is to engage the community in further discussion. We will be in touch with more information soon.
